The Library
Role: The new guidelines for Grade
9 clearly call for library time and the teaching of research skills.
The following chart is designed to show some of these areas in the guidelines
and profiles. Near the end of this document is a list of the library
"agenda" – those skills which we believe should be mastered by each high
school student. We can teach and track library/research skills as
they are used in the new guidelines and accomplish several goals:
• fulfill the mandate
of the guidelines in teaching students how to access, assess, process and
present research materials
• ensure our students
are information literate and ready for the world of work and/or education
beyond high school
• track the progress
of our students in terms of research and information skills and thereby,
be accountable to the parents of our students
• provide our students
with up to date information. Our new textbooks will become dated
very quickly and each library offers materials which will bridge the gap
between text information and today's information
• each library has
the "print, non-print, CD and Internet" resources dictated in each guideline.
We have the information about "Canadian contributions" in each field as
well as Career information.
• Our libraries are
also the places which co-ordinates school essay and research paper formats:
bibliography, endnotes, format for citations, etc.
• We are also people
who can teach students how to assess information: is it correct? Current?
Biased? Complete? Students especially need to know how to assess
Internet resources
• Our libraries have
created a unified Library home page containing links necessary for projects
suggested in the new guidelines and profiles. This page will be constantly
updated.
